Mental Health Self-Assessment Guide

Joseph LaFleur, LICSW — Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker
Psychotherapist · Trauma Specialist · Somatic Therapy · Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

How Do I Know If I Need Mental Health Support?

If you’re asking yourself whether you might benefit from therapy, this guide can help you identify common mental health concerns and determine your next steps. As a licensed therapist specializing in trauma, somatic therapy, and innovative treatment approaches, I help clients navigate a wide range of mental health challenges.

This guide is for educational self-reflection only. It is not a diagnostic tool, and identifying with any of these descriptions does not mean you have a specific condition. A licensed mental health professional can provide a formal assessment.

Am I Experiencing Trauma Symptoms?

Have you experienced a trauma-related event? Do you have nightmares and flashbacks about experiences in your life? Do you experience the anxiety and depression symptoms described above following a traumatic event?

As a trauma specialist trained in somatic therapy, Joseph LaFleur understands how trauma affects both mind and body, and uses evidence-based approaches — including Somatic Experiencing — to help with healing.

Are You Experiencing Hallucinations or Delusions?

These symptoms require immediate professional attention:

Do you see things that aren’t there? Do you hear things that aren’t there? Do you question whether your thoughts are accurate or based in reality?

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, please contact a mental health professional immediately or visit your nearest emergency room.

How Long Have You Been Struggling?

Duration helps determine the best treatment approach. Consider whether you’ve had most of these issues for less than six months, more than six months, or more than two years. Longer duration often indicates deeper patterns that benefit from professional therapeutic support.
